THE PROBLEM

The Auditor General’s Citizen Report PFMA 2018-19 reported the following shocking figures:
  • Government irregular spending for 2018/19 = R62,6 billion
  • This is an increase of R11 billion on the R57 billion that was reported in 2017/18
  • What will the 2019/20 figure be?
  • What will the 2020/2021 figure be taking COVID-19 corruption into account?

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

62,6 billion Rand of our tax money have been wasted, not utilised for the purpose it was meant and enriched government officials and their family and friends with no or very little accountability.

How much is R62,6 billion:  R62,600,000,000.00

One billion Rand is One Thousand Million Rand
R62,6 billion is 62,6 Thousand Million Rand

How much “good” could have been done with R62,6 billion?

WHAT CAN WE AS TAXPAYERS DO?

As taxpayers and citizens of South Africa we have 3 choices:
  1. We can decide to do nothing and hope that our corrupt government will sort out the corruption, better manage tenders and decrease irregular spending; or
  2. Some of us can immigrate in the hope of a better life; or
  3. We can take hands; ensure we hold each corrupt government officials accountable and ensure that corrupt government officials are brought to task and have their day in court.

WHO AND WHAT IS "THE ACCOUNTABILITY PROJECT"?

  • As taxpayers we have the right to ask questions about the spending of our tax money.
  • The Accountability Project is a Non-Profit Organization with the sole purpose of privately investigating irregular spending and privately prosecuting corrupt government officials. If our government can’t or won’t do it, then we will.
  • Our long-term aim is to ensure that government officials follow the correct tender procedures, eradicate irregular spending completely and ensure government officials that do not comply are brought to task and personally held accountable.
  • We have establishing a network of attorneys and advocates, throughout South Africa, that have generously offered some of their time and/or offered to take on matters at reduced fees.
